The Penny Experiment

When hubby and I did our budget at the beginning of the month, we wanted to add in a spot for donating. But there is no way right now that that is possible. I had mentioned volunteering at the local food bank but they are only open twice a week from 9-3. There is no way I could do that with 2 kids. So, when I came across this post on a Penny Experiment it sounded like the perfect solution for us right now.

Jeffrey Strain found a penny on the ground and is attempting to turn that found penny into $1 million worth of food for food banks. He sold his original penny for $10, and had artists turn 100 of those pennies into art which he is now selling. He is giving the money the art makes to couponers to use coupons to shop for food to maximize that money to donate to food banks!

Kinda confusing? Here's the "easy" explanation : you use coupons to buy food at the lowest price possible (just like you're doing now...) document your purchases on your blog, take the food to the food bank and Jeffrey reimburses you. You are donating food to your community and helping a wonderful project!! It's a win-win!

So what are you waiting for? Get started today!

  1. This is such a great idea, I emailed for the details after reading about it via your link. Thanks for passing this along!

  2. It's hard when we want to serve, but dot have the money to do so.

There are ways to serve from home, without spending money. I have a list of ways here:

Hopefully that can give you a few more ideas!
