Let's Talk... Period - Ovarian Cancer

Almost a quarter of the U.S. population is made up of menstruating women, but gynecological health is rarely discussed. In an attempt to raise awareness, Seventh Generation created a site that will aim to educate women about alternatives to conventional feminine care products. Let's Talk Period.

"Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among U.S. women.

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often vague and subtle, making it difficult to detect and diagnose.

Signs and symptoms include: bloating, pelvic and/or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly and urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency). If a woman is experiencing these symptoms for two or more weeks, and if they are new and unusual for her, she should see her doctor, according to OCRF.

The rayon in tampons is often whitened with chemicals containing chlorine, which can result in dangerous chlorinated toxins released in the environment.

If every women of reproductive age in the U.S. replaced one package of 16 count regular size conventional rayon/cotton blend tampons with Seventh Generation’s organic cotton tampons, we could prevent 17,000 pounds of pesticides from entering our environment and polluting our rivers, lakes and streams." That's a lot of pesticides! I think of all the harm my cleaning products and packaging is doing to the earth - I never thought about feminine products!

So what can you do to help fight Ovarian Cancer?

Seventh Generation has created a website where people can go to learn about gynecological health and contribute to the OCRF, the leading organization dedicated to eradicating ovarian cancer and supporting those suffering from the disease. Seventh Generation is encouraging people to log on to http://www.letstalkperiod.com/ during September. When you register your email address, Seventh Generation will make a $1 donation to the OCRF in your name (capped at $10,000.)

That's it! All you have to do is register your email address to help fight Ovarian Cancer! I've registered, have you?
